No longer a student.

I have been out of school for 4 semesters now. Trying to get things off the ground making furniture, and I keep finding that I really enjoy making tools. Most recently I made a wooden bodied Fore Plane, it was an absolute blast.

Bending

Today in my wood class we had a demo on laminate bending. The important points were these:
~make sure the layers are thin enough to bend easily on the form
~use plastic resin glue
~Plane both sides of the layers
~DO A DRY RUN!!!!!
~have enough people to help
~make sure that you tap all the layers flush to the floor of the form

Metals Project

I am working on my Constructed Ring midterm project for my intro to metals class. I will be soldering 16, 16 gauge nickel wires to the inside of a large, 16 gauge bronze band. The wires are soldered to 4 16 gauge silver ring shanks. I shall post pictures in a day or two. I will be calling this piece Sixteen.

I'm going to try keeping this thing up to date.

This is my third post ever on here. It has been most of a year since I started this thing with no follow through. I shall try to post at least once a week. In recent news:
I got a piece accepted to the Juried Student show at OCAC, it was a collaborative piece that I did with Jason Rens.
I had my critique for my first major wood piece of the year this past Tuesday, there were some details that I needed to work on, I fixed those, but there were some other problems that kept it from getting accepted to the show.
My free copy of The Gathering Storm arrived yesterday, I managed to score an unbound copy from Tor, they were super nice and friendly once I managed to find a way to contact them. I shall be binding it for the final project in my Book and Box Structures class.

Some of my favorite sites

I follow these these blogs:
Christopher Schwarz
Adam Cherubini
Konrad Sauer
These comics:
Questionable Content
Dr. McNinja
xkcd
This is a reasonable introduction to the kinds of things I enjoy, more later.

let's get this thing started

I've been away from campus, and therefore the studio/shop, for 3 weeks now. I've been visiting my family over Christmas break. Needless to say I have grown rather restless with no shop time, so I've been contenting myself with following enough other woodworking blogs to inspire me to create my own. Over the next few posts I shall spend some time introducing myself, my view of woodworking, and my family. Shortly, the new semester will start and I can begin to write about my new projects.
During the next 11 days I will be building a cradle as a gift to my sister for my first-born niece, she's due in May. Then the semester will start and I will need to concentrate on school work.
